My role is to be an effective pastor-teacher with one foot in the biblical world and one foot in the 21st century world. This role is defined in Ephesians 4:11-13, where the Apostle Paul writes;

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

If I could put it in Football terms I would say that my job is not to be the star player, who comes on to the field on Sunday to the acclaim of the church but to be the football manager who stands on the touchline shouting on the team and helping to train and equip all players (Christians) for whole life discipleship. Teaching the word of God and pastoring the flock of Christ and seeking the lost sheep would be another way of putting it. That involves feeding and protecting the flock from dangerous false teachers called wolves by Jesus and Paul (see John 10:11-13, Matthew 7:15-20 and Acts 20:28-31).

What do I do when I am not being a pastor-teacher? I like going on long walks with my wife Gloria in the Lake District. I also like reading about history and politics and I like sailing on Ullswater, but I don't get much chance since the lake has often too little or too much wind for a novice sailor like me! I dont have my own boat but borrow one from a club at Glennriding. Perhaps you might like to come some time?
