Challenge Hebrews

Dear Friends,

This year is a very special year for us and studying the letter to the Hebrews will encourage us daily to keep keeping on in the gospel. As you know 2017 is our 150th anniversary year. We have fifteen steps or events to celebrate what God has done over the last 150 years in our parish. It’s called “Back To the Future 2017”, because we want to use the celebration as a springboard for gospel growth in the future.

The Jewish Christians the letter is addressed to were being tempted to go back to Judaism. The writer shows that Jesus is greater than Moses, greater than angels, in fact, greater than everything created; because he is the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity who came to earth to save us. If we have Jesus we have everything; if we forsake him we have nothing, that is the message of Hebrews!

As with our first two in the series “Challenge Romans” and “Challenge John”, which many enjoyed, don’t be discouraged and give up if you fall behind the dates. Just pick it up again and keep going. Let’s encourage each other by sharing with one another a blessing we have received from reading Hebrews as a parish when we feel the grace of God touching our lives. As I visit members of the church I love to use the daily reading to share what blessing I have received that day.

Do forgive any mistakes or errors of grammar or the like. This has not been proof read but I hope and trust that God will bless you as much in reading it and sharing as I had in preparing it. Again I have to say that for most of this I have stood on the shoulders of others much more capable than I am. I have used several commentaries and because this is just going to a limited circle I am not putting in references to authors as I would with a published book.

The great theme of Hebrews is “Jesus is Greater”. Let’s take strength from that truth and use it to spur one another on, as in the words of Hebrews 3:13, But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today’, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

Let’s pray that God will make 2017 a great year for St Johns and St Andrews. Doing this daily reading of Hebrews together could be really powerful.

Best wishes

Steve Donald
